A guide based on the teachings of Richard Lang and Douglas Harding.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Introduction: Waking Up to the Obvious ๐Ÿ”—

“The Headless Way” is a direct, experiential path to recognizing your true nature. Originally discovered by philosopher Douglas Harding and widely taught by Richard Lang, this method doesn’t rely on years of complex spiritual practice. Instead, it asks a very simple question: What are you, from your own point of view?

From a few feet away, you look like a person with a head, a face, and a distinct physical boundary. But when you look closely at your own direct experience in this exact momentโ€”without relying on memory or mirrorsโ€”what do you actually see?

The following is a guided walkthrough of the classic “Pointing Experiment.” Read it slowly, pausing at the italicized prompts to actually perform the experiment. Don’t think about the answers; just look.

๐Ÿงญ The Guided Experiment ๐Ÿ”—

๐Ÿ‘‰ Phase 1: Looking Outward ๐Ÿ”—

Take a moment to sit comfortably and look straight ahead. Notice the environment around you.

Stretch your arm out in front of you and point your index finger at a distant object in the roomโ€”perhaps a wall, a window, or a picture. Notice the object’s shape, its color, and its solidity.

Now, move your finger and point it at the floor. Notice the textures, the colors, and the undeniable presence of the floor.

Bring your finger closer and point it at your own foot. Look at your foot. Notice that it has a shape, a color, and a boundary. It is a thing in the world.

Move your finger up and point it at your knee, then your chest. Again, observe. You see fabric, colors, shapes. You see a physical form.

๐Ÿ”„ Phase 2: Turning the Arrow Around ๐Ÿ”—

Now, we are going to do something unusual.

Take your pointing finger and slowly turn it around by 180 degrees, so that it is pointing directly back at where others see your face. Point directly at where you have been told your head is.

Look out at your pointing finger.

What is your finger pointing at?

Don’t rely on memory. Don’t rely on what you see in the mirror. Don’t rely on what others tell you. Trust only your present, direct visual experience.

Are you pointing at a face? Are you pointing at a head with eyes, a nose, and a mouth?

Or, in your direct experience, is your finger pointing at nothing at all?

๐ŸŒŒ Phase 3: The Boundless Space ๐Ÿ”—

Look closely at what is on your side of that pointing finger.

Do you find two little windows to look out of? Or do you find a single, vast, wide-open window? Do you find a boundary separating you from the world? Or do you find empty space?

Look at the nothingness here.

It is not a dead, empty void. It is an awake, conscious nothingness. It is a clear, transparent space that is completely full of whatever you are looking at.

Right now, that space is filled with your pointing finger, the room, the sounds around you, and the sensations in your body.

You are not a thing looking at other things. From your own center, you are the capacity for the world to happen. For others, you have a face. For yourself, you are space.

๐ŸŒ‘ Phase 4: Closing the Eyes ๐Ÿ”—

Now, gently close your eyes.

Notice what happens to the world. The visual room disappears, replaced by darkness.

But where does this darkness exist? Does this darkness have a shape? Does it have an age? Does it have an edge or a boundary?

Listen to the sounds happening around you. A car going by, the hum of a refrigerator, the sound of your own breath. Are these sounds happening outside of you, or are they arising right here, in this boundless, headless space of awareness?

๐ŸŒ… Phase 5: Returning to the World ๐Ÿ”—

Open your eyes again.

The world reappears. But notice that you haven’t suddenly grown a head. You are still this open, clear, boundary-less space, taking in the colors and shapes of the world.

When you walk around today, you don’t have to stop thinking or doing your normal tasks to realize this. You can simply notice, at any moment, that you are moving through the world face-to-no-face. The world is coming right into you. There is no distance, no separation, and no wall.

You are free.

โœจ Post-Meditation Reflection ๐Ÿ”—

The profound realization of The Headless Way is that enlightenment or self-realization is not a distant, mystical state meant only for a chosen few. It is the most obvious, ordinary truth of your existence, available at any moment.

You just have to remember to look at what you are looking out of.
