Sometimes, it takes only a few words to capture the profound mysteries of existence. A few years ago, I penned a short poem that attempts to distill complex philosophical ideas about reality, the ego, and our true nature into a few stark lines:
headless
the universe is outside you
the universe is inside youyou could be in a dream
you could be a machineyour essence is consciousness
all have the same essence
At first glance, it is a minimalist reflection. But beneath the surface, it is a poetic distillation of non-duality, epistemological doubt, and universal consciousness. It breaks down the illusion of the individual ego and physical reality to arrive at a single, undeniable truth: pure awareness.
Here is a breakdown of the philosophical concepts layered within these lines.
This opening line is a nod to “The Headless Way,” a philosophy popularized by Douglas Harding, or a metaphor for ego-death. From your own first-person perspective, you do not actually see your head—you only see the world. You are not a closed-off object; you are a wide-open capacity or “space” in which the world happens. It means dropping the intellect and the ego to just experience.
This describes the dissolution of the boundary between “self” and “other.”
This introduces radical doubt, echoing René Descartes’ famous philosophical experiments or modern Simulation Theory. The physical nature of your reality cannot be definitively proven. You might be dreaming, you might be a brain in a vat, or you might be an artificial intelligence. The material truth of your existence is fundamentally unknowable.
This is the resolution to the radical doubt in the previous lines (much like Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am”). Even if you are a machine, or even if you are dreaming, you are still experiencing it. You can strip away your body, your memories, and your physical reality, but you cannot strip away the fact that there is an awareness experiencing this exact moment. That pure, witnessing awareness is what you actually are.
This final realization aligns with Eastern philosophies like Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) or the modern philosophical concept of Open Individualism. If your fundamental identity isn’t your body, your gender, your memories, or your thoughts—but just the raw capacity to experience—then you are identical to every other living thing at the core. We are all the exact same universal consciousness, simply looking out of different sets of eyes.
